Overview

There is almost a circuit for yachts travelling around the BVI, an anti-clockwise route through the islands, the result of holiday timings and nautical logic - changeover day is Saturday and most of the marinas are on the south coast of Tortola. Some yachts scoot across to lovely Jost for the first night, but most head across to Norman Island, or to Cooper Island. You can avoid the crowds, obviously, but it is also fun to share the sailing experience with other crews, meeting them in the bars along the route. Yachts often make an anti-clockwise route around the islands, working their way up the island chain to Virgin Gorda, and then crossing the 15 miles of open sea to Anegada. From there they usually catch the following wind to the East End of Tortola, before heading back to Jost or across the Channel again for their final evening.

Tour Plan

Day 1: Immersive Arrival

8:00 am to 10:00 am

Head to Tortola, the largest island in the archipelago, to pay a visit to Road Town – the capital of the BVI. This lively town also happens to be the party capital of the archipelago, with live music and dancing throughout the bars and clubs until the early hours. Visit the nautical-themed Pusser’s Pub and the open-air Dockside Bar, which has live music on Friday and Saturday nights. As a key BVI yachting hub, Road Town also has sheltered harbours, plenty of mooring opportunities and marinas in the centre of town for a short stumble home. Alternatively, head over to Cane Garden Bay on the north side of the island for the Paradise Club. This buzzing beach bar has live music and full-moon parties with psychoactive mushroom tea (don’t worry, it’s legal) while firepits and tiki torches light up the beach.

Day 2: Enjoying

8:00 am to 10:00 am

The British Virgin Islands may conjure images of deserted white beaches, quiet sailing and secluded anchorages, but it’s not all peace and quiet. Alongside the lush scenery, this colourful archipelago fizzes with Caribbean culture. From dancing under the stars at the plentiful full-moon parties to sipping rum cocktails to the tune of live steel drums, we round up the best spots to enjoy the humming nightlife in the BVI.

Day 3: Jouyful Moments

8:00 am to 10:00 am

The BVI has more beach bars per square mile than anywhere in the Caribbean. They lie scattered around the many islands on superb sand and coves, pastel coloured beacons of entertainment against the bright white coral sand. Some are ramshackle lean-tos with sand on the floor, ideal for a meal of fritters and beer, others are rather grander, with cocktail menus and filet mignon - though you still never need to wear anything more formal than shorts and a tropical shirt. 1. The Soggy Dollar, White Bay, Jost van Dyke 2. Hendo’s Hideout, White Bay, Jost 3 Willy T, The Bight, Norman Island 4. Cooper Island 5. Jumbie’s Beach Bar, Leverick Bay, Virgin Gorda 6. The Sand Box, Prickly Pear Island, North Sound, Virgin Gorda 7. Potter’s by the Sea, Setting Point, Anegada

Relaxing on the beaches and exploring charming villages like Oia was a delight. However, it's a popular tourist destination, so expect crowds during peak seasons.
